Hardback. On Tuesday morning, June 28, 1887, in the East End of London, Miriam Angel was found dead. Nitric acid had been poured down her throat. Israel Lipski, a 22-yr. old Polish immigrant Jew was charged with her murder. This is the story of Lipski's trial, conviction and the fight for his reprieve. The author unearthed the original transcript of the trial, and uses it extensively to demonstrate the evidence relating to the murder and the manner in which it was set out before the jury. His conviction was highly controversial, as some felt the prosecution was influenced by anti-semitism, but he confessed the evening before his execution. Lipski's name was allegedly used in 1888 as an anti-Semetic insult. Illus., Notes on Sources. Map eps. 219pp. 8vo. h/back. Includes tipped-in photocopied 'The Sunday Times' book review by John Mortimer, to bep. Browned edges, o/w Vg+ in F. protected dw.
