Hardback. The first full life of William Fuller, one of the most notorious scoundrels and libellers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Fuller served as a double spy for William III and the exiled James II. When he was unmasked as an agent. Fuller conducted a series of scandalous campaigns against leading politicians and became the most virulent champion of the allegation that James Francis Edward was a bastard Prince of Wales. His name must always be closely associated with the fantastic Warming Pan Plot. Nothing had been known about the latter years of Fuller's life. He disappeared from public view 17yrs after his conviction in 1702 for writing inflammatory books which attacked Secretaries of State and others. The author found unpublished correspondence in the Public Records Office and the British Museum which showed that William Fuller lived until 1733, and continued to correspond with many famous people of his day. One of his last efforts was the ingenious scheme to blackmail the Archbishop of Canterbury. A fascinating study of the period, presenting the story of an extraordinary rogue and confidence trickster whose cunning lies echoed throughout England for several generations. Illus., List of Books and Pamphlets by William Fuller + Index. 250pp. 8vo. h/back. With previous owner's b/plate to fpd + tiny label o/w Vg+ in Vg+ sl. chipped and sunned Vg. dw.
