The book is based on original documents in Oxfordshire Records Office, many of which are from obscure collections unseen for decades. From the sinister 17th century clergyman known as The Black Rat to that elegant gentleman of the road, James Hind, it investigates the dark side of a county known for Cotswold scenery and the world's most famous university. The book reveals that some fairly unpleasant things happened behind that scenery, and the scholars of the university and the county weren't all they might have been. Indeed when the inhabitants of Oxfordshire aren't poisoning their fathers, shooting their uncles or setting fire to their employers' property, they seem to be stealing one another's wives or beating one another senseless.
