Hardback. Reissue. A reconstruction of the Bravo case where a domestic tragedy descended in a split second upon a family of wealth and social position. On the evening of April 18, 1876, Charles Bravo, a young barrister, collapsed and died as the result of a fatal dose of an irritant poison. In the 54 hours which elapsed between his return to consciousness and death, he was in full possession of his faculties, but at no time did he provide any information on the poison or how it got into his body. The Jury at the Inquest returned an open verdict instead of the expected verdict of suicide, which resulted in a further "trial by inquest" at which Florence Bravo (the wife) and her companion were put in the position of being accused persons. After 23 days, the jury returned a verdict of Wilful Murder, adding that there was not sufficient evidence to fix the guilt on any person or persons. With 30 Illus., Appendices and Index.
