Hardback. New US Edn. 2nd printing. With an Intro' by Joseph Henry Jackson. The first novel by a Native American, is a fictional biography of a Mexican bandit in Gold Rush-era California. Facing racist violence, Murieta turns outlaw, leading a 2,000-strong band in a vengeful crime spree. The author's Cherokee perspective blends admiration and critique, depicting Murieta as a rebel against Anglo oppression. Originally published in 1854 by W. N. Cooke in San Francisco, it saw a revised 3rd edn. in 1871 by Frederick MacCrellish. This 1955 University of Oklahoma Press edition used a rare 1854 copy. Widely translated, it inspired Zorro and remains influential. With 4 Illus. 159pp. 12mo. h/back. With tiny label to fpd, lightly browned edges o/w Nr. F. in shelf-worn Nr. Vg. pcdw.
