The tainted sheriff in this narrative is Henry Plummer who, in 1852, arrived in Nevada City, a gold camp in California's High Sierra. His life here began innocently enough, but he soon had 2 murders to his credit and 10yrs. later was a fully fledged villain directing a gang of criminals. In 1863 he moved to Idaho and was elected sheriff despite his doubtful past. There he fell foul of the vigilantes.
