The first dealt with a panorama of Victorian murder and this book deals with capital crimes during the reign of Edward VII. This study of murder is written against the background of a society fresh from the puritanism of the old queen, a society which the author believed foreshadowed the permissive age. He sets the scene for his casebook by portraying the social, political and moral climate of the time and then describes the circumstances of the infamous crimes that shocked a nation.
