Hardback. 1st US Edn. The author as an American police reporter, has written coldly and objectively on what he saw in the actual functioning of the American police. He was no "reformer" and in fact sympathised with the policeman's point of view, but in preparing this book he abandoned his own sympathies. He had seen detectives beat a prisoner until they were arm-weary and sweat poured from their brows. He saw a man clubbed over the throat until blood gushed from his mouth. He saw an obdurate suspect subjected to the refinements of torture in a dentist's chair, and watched the interplay of a mysterious "influence" which protected certain favoured thugs and gangsters from rough treatment. 248pp. 8vo. h/back. With small label to fpd o/w Nr. F. Scarce.
