In 1809, the Duke of York was forced to resign following a public scandal around his mistress, Mary Anne Clarke, instigated by George Wardle MP. He soon returned to his post and continued his programme of reform. In 1815, Parliament publicly recognised his outstanding service in reforming the army when reform was most needed.
