His memoirs include a dozen murder cases, but are interesting chiefly for the accounts of more professional villains, racecourse gangs, diamond tweedlers, coiners, petermen etc. Cases include : Gordon Cummins, August Sangret, Edward Kingston, the murder of Daphne Bacon + many others. When he left the force, with 88 commendations, he had been for more than 4yrs head of the C.I.D. in Scotland Yard's No. 1 District, which took in Soho and the West End and covered a third of Greater London.
