Softcover. 'Orrible murder was one of the cries used by the vendors to sell newspapers and broadsheets during the 18th and 19th centuries, and Staffordshire provided a chorus of these cries. Probably Palmer, the Rugeley poisoner is the most well known of the County's murderers, but the killing of Christina Collins became another notorious case. During the 18th and 19th centuries many crimes were punishable by death and, whilst we may think that violence abounded in the 20th century, it is probable that we hear more than formerly, due to improved communications. But a search through newspapers and other records reveals some horrendous occurrences. Chapter headings include : Charles and Hannah Squires; Mr. Charlesworth of Abbots Bromley; Murder and Riot in Leek; The Hoar Cross Murder; The Murder of William Cooper; William Howe alias John Wood etc. Illus. + Sources. 22pp. booklet. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Sl.sunned, but no creasing to covers. Vg+
