Booklet. An account drawn mainly from existing records of the Bedfordshire Assizes during the Restoration period. These records number over a thousand documents and include statements made by accused persons and witnesses taken down verbatim before a Justice of the Peace, recognisances binding witnesses and accused to appear in court, bills of presentment recording the names of the accused and their alleged offences, with a note of sentence passed, and lists of prisoners in the County Gaol. The whole gives a detailed picture of crime, trial and punishment in the 17th century Assize courts, revealing the many aspects of the social life of the time. 26pp. booklet.
