Hardback. Afterword by Wendy Cukier. On December 6, 1989, Marc Lepine walked into the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal armed with an assault rifle. During the next 45 minutes he shot 27 people, 14 of then - all women - died. Once in a while out of the worst tragedies some good can arise. After the Montreal Massacre it started when the author, an engineering student at the school, joined forces with Wendy Cukier, a professor in Toronto, in an effort to change Canada's gun laws. Both women wanted it made illegal for anyone to buy an assault rifle - a weapon manufactured for war - over the counter. And they wanted a national registry of all other firearms. Against great odds and the small but highly vocal opposition of gun clubs and hunting associations, Rathjen and Cukier, with the assistance of countless other Canadians, gradually built support for gun control into an irrestible force. With Appendix. 211pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true-crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. F. in f. dw.
