Don Antonio Jose Chavez, a well known and popular merchant in New Mexico, was robbed and killed on the trail in Kansas. His assailants were 15 outlaws from western Missouri who had obtained a commission from the Republic of Texas to attack Mexican freighters travelling between Santa Fe and Independence. The author begins his study with the events leading up to the crime, describes the pursuit of the offenders by US Dragoons and citizen posses, recounts details of the trial and execution of the two ringleaders, and shows how the murder was linked to other importanmt historical events of the period.
