Hardback. From the Short-hand Notes Taken in the Central Criminal Court from Day to Day. Dr. William Palmer was a notorious 32yr. old English poisoner of possibly 14 people, whose trial in 1856 made legal history. As a result of a wave of local hostility in Rugeley, the 'Palmer Act' was passed by parliament making it possible for an accused person to be tried in London if he was unlikely to get a fair trial in his own county. Palmer was tried at the Old Bailey in May 1856, and despite an 8-hour plea by his counsel, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death. He was hanged outside Stafford Gaol on June 14, 1856. He made no confession. Profusely Illus. with b/w engravings. 184pp. small 8vo. h/back. Tastefully rebound with modern binding. Covers F. contents Vg+
