Hardback. 5th Edn. Revised and Enlarged (1st pub. 1796). The Scots-born Dr. Colquhoun became a Magistrate in London in 1792 and was well-known as an indefatigable reformer and an influential voice in the creation of a full-time police force. Pp. 253-256 incl. have been neatly removed, presumably through 'censorship' as they all relate to sex offences, ie Rape, Sodomy, Forcible Marriage and Defilement, Polygamy, and included Jewish, Grecian and French Laws. With Index. 444pp. 8vo. h/back. With ribbon bookmark present. The top 1" of the tp. has been neatly cut with no loss to text. Some underlining to text + tiny notes in Pitman shorthand in margins. Contemporary calf binding with corners and lower edges rubbed. Gilt titles and raised bands on sp. Vg+. An important book in its own right as it's From the library of SIR ROBERT PEEL with his personal b/plate to fpd. (see image). A fairly heavy book which will require additional postage and insurance if shipped overseas.
