Hardback. SIGNED. Sir James Cassels was known as one of the greatest criminal advocates of the 20th century and, as Lord Birkett once said, perhaps the most beloved judge ever to sit on the bench in England. As a barrister his clients included the most notorious murderers of the previous 50yrs. and he defended Patrick Mahon, the Crumbles murderer, Norman Thorne, found guilty of dismembering his sweetheart, and the matricide Sydney Fox. As a judge he presided at the sensational re-trial of "George" Kelly, the gang leader who killed 2 men in a Liverpool cinema raid, and Straffen, the child murderer who killed again during a brief escape from Broadmoor. Murder was but one aspect of Cassel's career. Before he was 21, he was a Fleet Street journalist and a famed shorthand writer in the Parliament Press Gallery. Later he became an outspoken Tory MP. Both in private and public life he knew grief and disappointment as well as happiness and drew on this experience as a judge when he became noted for his wise counsel. Illus. + Index. 338pp. 8vo. h/back. FLATSIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Vg+ in Nr. Vg. pcdw showing signs of shelfwear.
