Hardback. With a Foreword by Ewen Montagu. Many people have thought that Dickens based his character Fagin on Ikey Solomons who was active in London in the 1820s, a few years before "Oliver Twist" was written. Ikey Solomons certainly had a colourful and eventful life. After an unsuccessful start as a pickpocket - he turned his talents to receiving stolen goods and became a dominant figure in London's crime. Escaping imprisonment he made his way first to America and then to Tasmania, where ironically enough he ended up a convict. Illus., Appendices, Note on Sources etc. Chronology. 178pp. 8vo h/back. Nr. F. in Vg+ pcdw.
