Hardback. SIGNED. When 'Punch' first saw the light of day in 1841, Peel's New Police were already 12yrs. old and from the beginning the pages of 'Punch' frequently included pictures, articles and verses about the policeman. For the first time, this book collected together some of the best of those drawings and jokes to present a fascinating picture of the police as seen through the eyes of 'Punch' cartoonists over the previous 120yrs. The illustrations throw revealing sidelights on the development of the British police services, and with the linking narrative shows not only the changing attitudes of the public towards the police but also provides an illuminating picture of domestic and political life in London over the period. From the time when 'Punch' saw the so-called 'typical' constable as an object of ridicule to the time when it was realised that 'the same men sitting down with their helmets off...were distinct individuals with very human personalities', these cartoons provided a penetrating and above all amusing insight into the character and story of the British policeman. For those with an interest in Jack the Ripper - pp.120-133 feature the 1888 Whitechapel murders, with one of Tenniel's cartoons 'Whitechapel 1888' which was published in the October 13, 1888 issue. Also featured are Sir Charles Warren in 'Another Miss', + James Monro, the MP and Home Secretary Henry Matthews, Florence Maybrick and Lipski. Chapter headings include : 1841-1868-Peel's New Police; 1869-1890-Some Victorian Home Secretaries and Commissioners; 1890-1919-Anarchists, Finger-prints and the Horseless Carriage; 1920-1939-Between the Wars; 1939-1964-The Police and the Public Today.
