Hardback. The subject of this book was a Ripper suspect. From 1877 to 1892, over the course of 15-yrs. Dr. Thomas Neill Cream murdered 7 women - all prostitutes or patients seeking abortions - in England and North America. His favourite weapon was strychnine. The popular press called the killings the incomprehensible crimes of a madman. According to the author, though, they in fact provide a distorted reflection of the doctor's culture and times. At his execution, whilst on the scaffold, he was allegedly overhead by hangman Billington to say, 'I am Jack the...' Research shows he was in fact incarcerated in Joliet Prison, Illinois, during the end of 1888 for the murder of a man called Stott. Illus., Notes, Select Bibliog. and Index. 217pp. 8vo. h/back. Foxed edges o/w Vg+
