Softcover. In 1978 4 young Mounties attempt a routine investigation of an overdue truck rental at a motel in Virden, Manitoba. Inside the motel a desperate, lawless couple, once referred to as Canada's Bonnie and Clyde, hide from the police. They are fleeing from previous crimes in Vancouver and Calgary and resist the Mounties with sudden and violent force. A wild-west gunfight ensues where one of the Mounties is killed and two others are badly wounded. One of the injured is a rookie policewoman only 6 weeks out of the training academy in Regina. The only RCMP to escape unscathed shoots the female fugitive in the back as the couple flees the scene in one of the police cruisers. This leads to an extended trail of mayhem and hostage-taking that runs through several farms on the back roads of south western Manitoba and, in turn, ignites one of the biggest manhunts in the history of the province. The chase culminates in a 4-day siege at a doctor's house in the sleepy village of Oak Lake where the Canadian Army is called on to help. A story considered to be one of the most interesting in all the files of the RCMP. Illus. + Epilogue. 268pp. trade size softcover. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. F. with no creasing to covers.
