Softcover. SIGNED. These 15 Wigan murders took place between 1863 and 1900. 'Hanging by the neck until dead' was still the recommended sentence of black-capped judges and the Home Secretary could give the thumbs-up or down on a prisoner's life, while fellow Wiganers petitioned for his survival. Poverty, starvation and drinking to excess were ever-present facets of life in 19th-century Wigan and several of the cases chronicled here involved domestic violence and robbery. One case involved a local Doctor accused of performing an 'illegal operation' which resulted in death. Most victims in these blood-stained pages were known to their assailants, though not the collier killed by the Italian organ-grinder! 150pp. trade size softcover. From the library of true-crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED TO WILF GREGG BY THE AUTHOR + an accompanying typewritten note explaining the reason for the 'shaky' handwritten dedication. Nr. F.
